Galchenyuk could find himself out of the lineup when the team is healthy

7 décembre 2019
If Alex Galchenyuk thought he had himself a guaranteed spot on the Pittsburgh Penguins' roster, he may want to think again. In an interview with The Athletic, Pens GM Jim Rutherford says when the team is healthy again, Galchenyuk could very well find himself on the outside looking in.

"The fact of the matter is, when we're totally healthy, he's going to have to work very hard just to get in the top 12," said Rutherford. "That's just the way it is, because we have a lot of guys playing well. So that's the good news and the bad news."

When Galchenyuk was first traded to Pittsburgh from Arizona, the belief was he'd be a perfect fit to play alongside Evgeni Malkin. Rutherford made it clear that experiment is over.

"I'm not totally convinced that there's the right chemistry there," Rutherford told The Athletic. "You have to have the right chemistry, the right fit. I never felt that that was going to be the right place for him."

Galchenyuk has dealt with some injuries this year, as have many other members of the Penguins team. He has two goals and eight assists in 20 games right now. Not necessarily terrible, but he's being out-shined by guys like Sam Lafferty, who has really stepped up in the midst of all the injuries. Galchenyuk is set to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career at the end of this season. If he starts to find himself as a healthy scratch for the Penguins, is almost a sure thing that Rutherford will try to trade him out of town before the 2019-20 deadline.
