Oilers, Kassian getting closer to reaching a deal

Zack Kassian is on the final year of a three-year, $1.95 million contract, and is set to become a free agent this summer.

On Friday afternoon, it was reported by Sportsnet's Mark Spector that Oilers GM Ken Holland and Rick Curran, Kassian's agent, have spoken several times and appear to be finding common ground.

This is huge news for the Oilers. Kassian has been great this season, and is a big reason why Edmonton is still in the hunt for first place in the Pacific Division. In 44 games this season, he has 13 goals and 28 points. He also leads the Oilers in hits with 123.

The fact that Holland and Kassian have been able to come to common ground so quickly is a good sign for the Oilers. It's likely that he is willing to take a discount in order to stay in Edmonton.

Spector then went on to add, "My sense: They will announce a multi-year deal prior to the trade deadline, and Kassian will not go to market on July 1.

On Monday, Kassian was suspended two games for his altercation with Matthew Tkachuk during last Saturday's heated Battle of Alberta. He is set to return to action after the All-Star break on Jan. 29 against Calgary.
