MONTREAL WORKING HARD TO FIND BACKUP FOR CAREY PRICE

One of the most prominent issues with the Montreal Canadiens the last few seasons has been the lack of a reliable backup goaltender for number one netminder Carey Price. Antti Niemi, Keith Kinkaid, and Charlie Lindgren were tried but failed to to help alleviate the load for Price. It's something the Canadiens goaltending coach Stephane Waite says the team is working hard on during the break in play.

"The NHL is now a league of two goalies per team and we know it," said Waite in an interview with TVA Sports. "[GM] Marc [Bergevin] is working hard on this."

However, he stressed it's not as easy as one might think.

"There are things we want to do, but we can't. It is difficult in Montreal to find a quality replacement. Several number two goalkeepers wish, one day, to get a chance to take the starting job, but they know that this is not possible in Montreal with Carey."

“We are aware that we have to find a good assistant. We have a plan."

Montreal has Cayden Primeau playing in the AHL who may be a suitable number two at some point. However, Primeau is just 20 right now and goaltenders generally take longer to develop than defensemen and forwards. Kinkaid, who was signed during the last offseason, failed miserably in his attempt to become the number two goalie in Montreal, being sent to the AHL after just six games.
