BRENDAN LEIPSIC OFFICIALLY SIGNS IN THE KHL

Brendan Leipsic, who had his contract with the Washington Capitals terminated back in May, has officially signed in Russia for the upcoming season. The 26-year-old native of Winnipeg has inked a one-year deal with CSKA Moscow, according to the KHL's official Twitter account.

Leipsic's troubles with the Washington Capitals came during the suspension of NHL play due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 6th, Leipsic, along with fellow player Jack Rodewald, were the subject of controversy after a conversation on Leipsic's Instagram account was leaked to the public. Leipsic and Rodewald were caught making misogynistic and derogatory remarks about the girlfriend of Connor McDavid and the wife of Tanner Pearson. Leipsic also took shots at former teammate Jake Virtanen and his then-current Capitals teammates Garnet Hathaway and Nic Dowd. Leipsic issued an apology, but was put on unconditional waivers by the Capitals two days later and his contract was subsequently terminated.

Leipsic was initially drafted 89th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2012. He never played in the NHL for the team, but has done stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks and LA Kings before signing a one-year deal with Washington during the offseason in 2019. In 187 career NHL games, he has 16 goals and 59 points.

There had been rumours of Leipsic heading to the KHL for a few months, although many pointed to a two-year deal instead of one-year. The signing was made official on Tuesday.
