AN ATV ACCIDENT REPORTEDLY LED TO ILYA SAMSONOV MISSING THE PLAYOFFS

Since announcing that goaltender Ilya Samsonov would not be playing for the Washington Capitals during round robin or the playoffs, the team has said very little else regarding his injury. Other than he wouldn't be back until next season, the only other thing the team has said is that a non-hockey related accident was the cause of his injuries. We're now getting more information out of Samsonov's home country of Russia regarding his injuries.

According to sports journalist Aleksey Shevchenko, Samsonov hurt his back and neck in an ATV accident in Magnitogorsk and there was apparently some serious damage. Perhaps worse for Samsonov is that, according to Shevchenko, the rookie netminder did not tell the team about his injuries and the full extent was only learned after he failed a physical after returning to Washington. The report states Samsonov hoped the inuries would be fully healed by the time training camp started but that was not the case.

Shevchenko is also claiming that Washington's management is not happy with Samsonov and that his reputation with the team has been damaged. The 23-year-old has been pegged to become the team's starter after this season as Brayden Holtby will become a free agent and the Capitals simply don't have the cap room to sign him to an extension.

Samsonov played 26 games in his rookie season, putting up a .913 save percentage. His entry-level contract lasts through next season. In early May, while the NHL was under the suspension of play due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Samsonov shared a video of himself riding an ATV in Russia on his Instagram account.
