VICTOR OLOFSSON, SABRES REACH MULTI-YEAR PACT, AVOIDING ARBITRATION

The Buffalo Sabres continue to truck along during the offseason with Thursday's announcement that the team will avoid its scheduled November 4th arbitration hearing with rookie Victor Olofsson, reaching a two-year, $6.10M (a $3.05M AAV) pact with the sharpshooting winger.

Olofsson, 25, took awhile to cook in the Swedish Hockey League prior to coming over to North America in 2018 after being drafted in the 7th round in 2014, but it appears as though that strategy has paid off well for both sides, as the Ornakoldsvik, Sweden native tallied 20 goals and 42 points in 54 games for the Sabres last season, his rookie campaign.

Olofsson's quick release and deadly accuracy led to much praise around the organization and the fanbase, but his work ethic and dedication are two things that stand out most to team captain Jack Eichel.

"Obviously, he wants to be a good hockey player. He cares about his game; he takes care of himself and he's constantly works on his shot. He definitely holds himself accountable. When you put those things together, you're bound to have success."

Olofsson is not without his flaws, and he recognizes that, pinpointing consistency as his main area of focus moving forward.

"I think that's something I've got to learn, just to be at a high level and be a threat all the time throughout an 82-game season. I think that's going to be the biggest challenge for me because I feel like I have the capability of scoring a lot of goals. So, I've just got to learn to manage the amount of games. That's my biggest challenge."

Nice piece of work here by Sabres GM Kevyn Adams, locking up the Swede for a couple of seasons and giving him the opportunity to establish his long-term value to the team before offering a long-term deal. For the player, it's an opportunity to really find his identity at the NHL level and work his way up toward a more lucrative deal ahead of the 2022-23 season.
