Whitney disputes claims about Hayes signing with Philly

august 17, 2019
Ryan Whitney, former player and current analyst for the NHL Network and co-host of the popular Spittin' Chiclets podcast, is taking issue with a claim that forward Kevin Hayes only signed with Philadelphia because the team was willing to overpay him. Whitney says he personally spoke with "Hayzy" and the player told him he was "fired up" when he was traded to the Flyers in June by the Winnipeg Jets.

At issue is TSN reporter Frank Seravelli appearing on a podcast saying “I was with a current NHL player the night before Game 7 in Boston who - five minutes before seeing me - ran into Kevin Hayes outside somewhere in downtown Boston, which is obviously his hometown. He goes ‘Oh yeah, I just ran into Kevin Hayes.’ He said Kevin Hayes told him the only way he’s going to the Flyers is if the Flyers overpaid to get him.

Hayes had his rights traded to Philidephia on June 3rd of this year. On June 19th, Hayes signed a seven-year deal with the Flyers worth $7.14 per season. The contract left many questioning the amount, as Hayes had been in the NHL five seasons and had only broken the 50 point mark once; in 2018-2019 when he had 54 points in 71 with the New York Rangers and Winnipeg.

Seravelli did respond to Whitney's tweet and it seems he's sticking by what he said.
