Report: trading Krug most likely scenario for cap-crunched Bruins

A report by Kevin Flanagan of Boston Sports Desk says, despite what Boston Bruins management might say, they know that trading defenseman Torey Krug is their best option for getting two other RFAs signed, while also staying under the salary cap. According to Flanagan, Cam Neely has already stated there's a high likelihood that the Bruins will start training camp, and possibly even their season opener, without 22-year-old Brandon Carlo and 21-year-old Charlie McAvoy.

Flanagan believes the cap hit for signing both these defenseman will come in over $11 million dollars. That's an issue for the Bruins, who currently only have about $7.3 million in cap space. The obvious choice would be ditchining David Backes, who has two years remaining on his contract at $6 million per season, but Boston would have to pull off a miracle to get that done. Since signing with Boston three season ago as a free agent, Backes has struggled. That was especially evident last season when he posted just 20 points in 70 games, nowhere near what is expected of a player making his kind of money.

That leads us back to Krug. The 28-year-old has one year remaining on his contract, with an AAV of $5.2 million. As Flanagan writes: for as much as the team would like to find another alternative to get the room they need under the cap to get deals done with McAvoy and Carlo – the stark reality is there is only one viable move that can be made to make that possible before the Bruins brass backs are pressed firmly against the wall. That, of course, is dealing offense-first defenseman Torey Krug.
