Journeyman Eric Tangradi leaving for KHL

august 19, 2019
Former NHL journeyman F Eric Tangradi is headed for the greener pastures of Kazakhstan and the KHL.

According to HC Barys, located in Nur-Sultan, the capital city of Kazakhstan, Tangradi signed a one year deal, running through April 2020. The city of Nur-Sultan was known as Astana and was renamed in March of this year in honor of retiring Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The club has two division titles to its credit, but has never won the Gagarin Cup, KHL's premier trophy.

Tangradi, 30, was a second round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. He has seen a total of 150 games of NHL action, split between the Pittsburgh Penguins, Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, and most recently the New Jersey Devils, where he suited up for six games in the last season. His career totals include 5 goals, 11 assists and 86 PIMs.

Tangradi is best known to NHL fans for being on the receiving end of a brutal play by the Islanders' Trevor Gillies, during an Isles/Pens game in 2011. The game that featured 346 penalty minutes and multiple suspensions afterwards, saw Gillies hitting Tangradi with a blindside elbow in the third period and a continued beatdown after Tangradi had crumpled to the ice. As a visibly concussed Tangradi was being helped up, Gillies, who was being escorted off the ice with game misconduct continued to taunt him. Gillies received a nine-game suspension for his actions.
