Tkachuk and Doughty start a line brawl

october 20, 2019
The continuing rivalry between LA Kings D Drew Doughty and Calgary Flames F Matthew Tkachuk resulted in a bit of a brawl last night between the two teams.

The two players, playing for division rivals have been poking at each other and taking liberties on one another for a couple of years now. This spring Doughty raised things to another level by saying he has "no respect" for Tkachuk. When the two teams met on October 8th in Calgary, Tkachuk had two goals, but Doughty topped him with two assists and the game-winning goal in OT as the Kings won 4-3.

In last night's game, neither player scored or assisted on a goal, but they found a different way impact the game. In the middle of the 3rd, with the Kings leading 4-0, Doughty upended Tkachuk with a perfectly legal hip check along the boards. Tkachuk did not take kindly to that and proceeded to trip Doughty down onto the ice, which began a pileup with members of each team jumping on top of the combatants to grab themselves an opposing player. The referees had to pry apart multiple pairs of what looked like a Greco-Roman wrestling meet. Tkachuk got 14 minutes worth of penalties (tripping, roughing, misconduct) while Doughty got away scot-free.

The Kings went on to win 4-1. They are 3-5 this year, but two of their wins are against the Flames.

Is Tkachuk vs Doughty the NHL's best rivalry?
