Ron MacLean's first real public statement since apology; 'I'm disappointed in me'

16 novembre 2019
Ron MacLean was somber and stoic while making his first real public statement on the Don Cherry controversy since his apology the day after the incident. In it, he said Coach's Corner is no more, and admitted to "hurting."

"I have collapsed 100 times this week, if not more," said MacLean while stating into the camera. "We're all disappointed, Bobby Orr is disappointed in me, Bobby, I'm disappointed in me."

MacLean said he's been reflecting all week long and listening to what people had to say on social media. He said he's also discussed the situation with Cherry himself.

"We have communicated...Don said 'Ron a lot of people will be watching this for a while', don't go too far."

"So all I can do is unpack my heart a little bit here and then see how you feel...it's not about Don and me, it's clearly about something bigger so let me go back to last Saturday and take you through the last 30 seconds of Coach's Corner."

"I was kind of praying, I don't think I'm hearing trouble, but I might be hearing trouble. Anyway, then it was done. Then you called us on it, which I thank you for because that's the new world."

"Now you have in real time, social media and kind of a democracy happening, so you caught it."

"I felt so bad, and I apologized immediately. And Don, you know Don, defiant. And there were steps that needed to be taken because of what had been said by Don. And he didn't want to do those steps. So, he made his choice and I made mine. And then the next choice, which was a really hard choice...I'm in a foxhole with Don and he had decided to go one way and I another. And you say ok, how can I choose principle over friendship? But I had to. I thought a lot about falling on my sword, too. And I thought, no but if I do that I infer that what happened is right somehow or that I'm going along to get along."

"Don taught me to stand, right, and I had to have to courage of my convictions. And that's what I'll say about you Don, you know I love you so much."

"Here I am standing up and taking my position, but that doesn't mean anything in terms of my respect for you and my judgement of you."

"We honour what you've meant to the game, to the fact that you've been there for human beings and sentient beings. Just a fantastic human being. I love you very much and we honour you tonight in this last talk about a Coach's Corner."
