Donald Brashear reportedly back in the game

17 novembre 2019
It's not the NHL--he's 47--but former NHL tough guy Donald Brashear, who had recently fallen on some tough times, is reportedly getting back into the game of hockey. The Courier Frontenac out of Thetford Mines, Quebec, is reporting that Brashear will be suiting up for that city's LNAH (North American Hockey League) team, the Thetford Assurancia.

It wouldn't be his first stint with the team. Thetford is the last team Brashear was paid money to play for, dressing for seven games with the Assurancia in 2015-16, and scoring two goals. He's also played for two other teams in the LNAH.

As TradeRumours reported here back in mid-October, Brashear was working at a Tim Hortons in Quebec City at that time, after making more than $15 million in his 17 years in the NHL. The owner of the shop, former NHLer Pierre Sévigny, indicated that it wasn't that Brashear necessarily needed the money. It was more about him finding some stability after some poor decisions that had led to legal troubles.

In 2012, Brashear was convicted of assault after an altercation in a parking lot following a LNAH playoff game in March of the previous year. He was sentenced to 18 months probation and a $6000 fine. He was also sued for damages by the victim in 2014 and ordered to pay $10,000. In November of 2018, his business - Brash Properties 87 - went bankrupt and was sued in civil cases. Brashear was ordered to pay $200,000 for outstanding mortgages. He was also arrested at his home in Quebec City on June 5th of this year and appeared in court August 12th on charges of mischief and possession of drugs.

Perhaps some hockey is just what Brashear needs to find even more stability as he gets his life back on track. The LNAH is a perfect fit for the enforcer. It is known for its rough style of play that usually results in many more fights than you're likely see in most other professional leagues.
