Leafs hold players only meeting; Mike Babcock talks the possibility of getting fired

19 novembre 2019
It is being reported that Toronto held a "player's only" meeting with the team's leadership group early this week as the Maple Leafs' struggles continue. Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun quotes blueliner Jake Muzzin as saying "It was an open discussion with the players to get a clear view on what needs to happen ... Winning solves everything and you don't have to have those meetings."

Meanwhile, Toronto head coach Mike Babcock isn't letting on that he has any concerns as rumours about his position start to heat up. As analysts and fans alike speculate on whether he might be the first NHL head coach to be fired this season, Babcock stated all he can do is focus on the game.

"I'm going to do it as hard as I can for as long as I can. I've always bet on Mike Babcock, I'll continue to bet on him," Babcock told reporters Monday.

He added he's not concentrating on the increased buzz surrounding his job security.

"Not really, I’m in a pretty good spot in my life. My kids are grown," said Babcock. "If my kids were young, I’d never coach in Toronto, OK? So in my spot, I don’t spend a whole lot of time listening.

"But I do get text messages from people that are friends and they’re sending ya texts (because) they care about ya."

According to Mark Masters of TSN, John Tavares and Morgan Rielly requested a private meeting with Babcock following last Saturday's loss to PIttsburgh. According to Rielly "We've talked about things we can change within the system and how we can improve, but it comes down to work ethic and that's on the players so that's what we have to be prepared to do"

Toronto currently sits fifth in the Atlantic division with a record of 9-9-4, not what many were expecting before the season started. Babcock and the Maple Leafs have a chance to try and get things back on track Tuesday night as they face the Golden Knights in Vegas.
