Don Cherry addresses his firing in first 'Grapevine' podcast

19 novembre 2019
Anyone who was expecting Don Cherry's first official podcast to go deep into what happened earlier this month when he was fired from Sportsnet after doing Coach's Corner for almost 38 years is likely to be a bit disappointed. Cherry does address the incident in the first five minutes of the episode, and then goes into more game-related topics such at plus-minus stats, and stories from his past dealings with players. He did, however, open the show with his side of the story, right after introducing himself and his son Tim.

"I offered to explain..not an apology but I was going to smooth it over. They (Sportsnet) made conditions that made it impossible for me to do it. I just couldn’t do it.”

Cherry does not explain what those conditions were. He did say he stands by what his comments regarding poppies.

"I said what I said and I still say everybody in Canada should wear a poppy. And I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again."

When asked by his son about the support he received following the incident on November 9th, Cherry said he had a lot of it.

“A lot of guys phoned me, a lot of hockey players phoned me, a lot of general managers phoned me, a lot of people, a lot of guys from the service left a message.”

“The policemen are with me, the servicemen are with me, the armed forces are with me, and the firemen are with me. They’re pretty good guys to have in your corner."

Cherry also mentioned he was very happy with the support he received in the aftermath from Max Domi of the Montreal Canadiens. Following Cherry's comments, Domi said "I love Don Cherry. I always have, always will. He's a big reason why most of us play hockey. We grew up looking up to a guy like that, watching 'Coach's Corner' and stuff. It's unfortunate what happened, it's sad. He's a big part of hockey. That's all really we can say unfortunately nowadays."

In his final few comments on the topic, Cherry stated if he had to go out after almost 40 years of doing Coach's Corner, he's fine with the way it happened.

“That's the way life is. I lived in a vicious world and I lasted 38 years. Happy to be there for 38 years and if I gotta go I’m glad I’m going out on my shield.”

His son Tim claimed "the cancel culture” had "their eyes set on you, they had their guns set on you this year and I think that’s what happened." Cherry did not really respond to that, and moved on to other topics.

He did mention Ron MacLean at the beginning of the segment, and repeated that while he was disappointed in MacLean's apology, he still considers his former co-host a friend.
